| Pastéis de Belém This pastelaria located in Belem is the most famous bakery in Portugal and dates back to 1837. Inside number 84 of the Rua de Belém, in a factory founded in 1837, you can see azulejo panels from the XVIIIth century, almost as famous as the sweet pastries sold there. Pastéis de Belém: one of the five rooms Custard tarts can be found in any Portuguese cafe, but the combination of puff pastry together with the cream sprinkled with icing sugar and cinnamon is still impossible to copy. These tarts are made with a top secret centuries-old recipe and sell over 10,000 tarts a day (with the record day being 55,000 sold).

The tarts aren’t the only attraction here. The cafe itself is a beautiful warren of rooms, covered with beautiful blue wall tiles.
The demand is considerable, but many tables and several lounges ensure that you will enjoy seated one or two of these traditional cakes.
