Santa Justa Lift
The Santa Justa Elevator is a remarkable masterpiece designed by an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel, which connects Baixa (downtown) and Bairro Alto (high neighbourhood).

Elevador de Santa Justa is a lift which carries passangers from the lower town to the upper town, near to Largo do Carmo and the ruins of Convento do Carmo .

The lower level of this lift is located between the streets Rua do Ouro and Rua de Santa Justa . Elevador de Santa Justa, which is made of iron and 32 foot tall was built in 1902 by Raul Mesnier du Ponsard , Portuguese engineer, a student of Gustave Eiffel . Tower is decorated with a delicate , rich ornamentation, typicall for neo-Gothic style. This elegant lift has two wooden cabins, each of which can take 25 people. Initially, the lift was powered by steam , but since 1907 it completely electrified .

At the top of the tower there is a terrace with views over the city and river. The view point and upper level of the elevador de Santa Justa is open daily from 08:30 to 20:30.
The ticket costs 5 Euros when purchased from the driver and it includes two lift rides and admission to the observation deck . Viva Viagem card holders pay as a single journey by public transport , which is 1.25 € (additional entrance to the observation deck costs 1.00 € ) .
