| Maritime Museum The Maritime Museum is a museum located in the west wing of the Hieronymite Monastery. You can see here: different kinds of boats, royal barges, charts, maritime instruments and historical seaplane. Maritime Museum: Has over 17 000 items The Bergantim Real, a sumptuous state barge built in Lisboa in 1778, and the hydro-plane used by Portuguese aviators Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho in 1922 to cross the Southern Atlantic for the first time. The oldest exhibit is a wooden figure representing the Archangel Raphael that accompanied Vasco da Gama on his voyage to India.

The Museum dates back to 1863, when D.Louis decreed the formation of a collection of testimonies related to Portuguese maritime activity. The Maritime Museum’s collection, that began during the XVIII century, has over 17 000 items, in addition to the archives of photography and ship’s drawings and plans, of which some 2500 have been selected for permament exhibition.
